Summer Time BOB Trailer-Wandertec SAX Special

It’s that time of year again when it’s time to tune up the bike and get out for some great cycling adventures. Perhaps it is time that you finally get yourself a bike cargo trailer to really expand your horizons. Maybe it’s a Extrawheel Voyager that will hold your gear as you meander down the Great Divide Trail. Or maybe you’ll be look for something better suited for around town adventures, you know like hauling potting soil and 3 plants back from Home Depot in a Wandertec Bongo bike trailer, or toting a pile of ribs, watermelon and beers to the park for a bbq in a Croozer Cargo or tying 100 helium balloons to a Burley Nomad filled with stuffed animals for a spectacular spectacle in the bike parade.

Or perhaps you’re looking for a bike trailer that offers the flexability and versatility for everything from off-road bike touring adventures to getting stuff done on the roads. The BOB Trailer has always been our favorite choice when it comes to a trailer that does it all. To make it do even more, we came up with the idea to add a fabric liner to it. The Wandertec SAX BOB Cargo liner (along with the Wandertec Cargo Net) is a perfect addition to the BOB, turning the cargo area into a tightly contained area where your stuff stays put. The SAX, made from tough ballistic nylon, is perfect for using a BOB Trailer as the “trunk” of your bike. Throw in groceries, throw in your laundry or clean out your close.

To prove the point, we are giving away a Wandertec SAX-BOB Liner with every BOB Trailer thru June 29th!

Getting the New Shop up to Operating Speed

Camera download 1-12-10 010Well its official, we are all moved in to the new Bike Shop Hub location on 120 E. Phoenix, in good ol’ Flagstaff, AZ. It was quite an endeavor to move an entire business in one weekend, but with some long hours we pulled it off. Its been quite a change to have moved from the East side of Flagstaff to downtown; quite an increase in the quality of life. The new shop is quite amazing, besides the fact that we have more then triple the space. Along with all the added space, we have a new addition to the company,Wandertec Fabrications.

The masterful metal creations of Stu Henderson, formally know as Silvertone Fabrications, are now a part of the Bike Shop Hub. The back half of the new space is dedicated to Wandertec fabrications. Not only will Stu continue to fabricate his own projects but he will be working to develop future bike trailer creations along with other bike touring and bike commuting innovations. So if you need a weld laid down, stop on by.

The larger space is great for us. It is allowing us to expand on multiple fronts. We are in the process of hiring two new employees, an internet marketer and a inventory manager, now that we have a proper office space. But don’t worry it’s no Penatrode. With added space comes added organization as well as the ability to expand the brands we carry to ensure we are always offering the most complete spectrum of bike touring, bike commuting and family cycling product available on the market, after all we are the experts.

One of the most interesting yet odd things that we have acquired is our new ladder. A ladder… Exciting, you say. Well kind of. The new building has ceilings that are 16ft, and we bought really tall shelving to maximize the space. Well we need a really tall ladder to get to the stuff that is stored that high. And by the way 16 ft is a lot taller then it sounds. We purchased a giant blue ladder to access everything a.k.a. Big Blue. Well it turns out Big Blue Camera download 1-12-10 001is really big and kind of a pain to maneuver around the aisles of the shop. So it mainly just stays in one place and allows us access to the soon to be break room above the office. We are looking for couches and lawn furniture to donate the the break area. Oh, and a water cooler as well.

All things considered, going from a 1000 sq ft garage to a 3700 sq ft warehouse is quite a liberating experience. Everyone has their own little space, and even Robin, pictured below, our special-needs employee is enjoying the new space. I should add to that, Robin isn’t really our special-needs employee. He is special and needy but certainly not special needs. The shipping department has had plenty of room to expand which will help us get your cycling products to you even faster. Having the downtown location has increased our foot traffic as well. We used to only have people stop by the old shop a couple of times a month, but now it seems as though people are popping in twice a week. Of course a large part of those are the “bro visits,” but hey, everyone loves company, right? I would have to say that the growing pains have been minimal and we are all very happy to be in the new space. We are looking forward growing into the space, and we being able to accomplish even more in bringing exciting new products and specialty shops to utility cyclists, family cyclists and bike touring enthusiats.

A Brewery a Bro and a BONGO

We our proud to announce the U.S. cinematic debut of the Wandertec Bongo, there was a previous European cinematic debut at Deavid Hembrow’s blog. Marty Benson and friends decided to make a pedal powered pilgrimage to Stone Brewery in Southern California. They decided to document their journey with a indie style film. Marty said that the main point of the ride was ” to not only make people rethink their transport (if just for a keg), but also point out some of the overlooked sustainable practices at Stone, such as their reclaimed materials and equipment, solar electrics and reuse of brewing yeasts for biodiesel.” Marty used a BONGO he purchased from us to transport an empty, then full keg of beer from Stone Brewery 20 miles to, and back again from his house. It was good to see the BONGO haul a full keg through the rolling hills of California using our strap system to hold it down. Check out the film Below.

Frakenbike in NYC

bike-with-banana-seat-in-nyc-cropAfter attending a wedding in NJ last weekend, my fiance and I got to spend a day in NYC. We chose to just do some urban hiking, meandering our way from mid-town down to lower Manhattan. It has been encouraging to see the growing presence of bikes in the city over the past years. There are always some entertaining examples of bicycles to see from the multitude of bike messengers to clapped-out delivery bikes. This year I not only saw 2 Xtracycle, but also a bakfiets, all parked in the Greenwich village area. I snapped this photo of this entertaining Frankenstein bike that’s hard to tell if it is seeing much service these days, but I’m sure provides plenty of entrainment when it does hit the roads.

Bike Touring Season in Full Swing

bike-tourist-relaxing-before-next-leg-of-journey-cropOn my way home from work, I stopped and chatted with this fellow who was prepping for the next leg of his journey heading out of Flagstaff. I couldn’t help by notice his well traveled Jandd panniers. He mentioned that he’d noticed that CrazyGuyOnTheBike.com is reporting 25,000 cyclists currently out on a bike touring adventure somewhere or other in the world.

Family Transportation with a DIY Bike Child Trailer

Riding home the other day, I passed this Dad transporting his kids. While at first glance, I couldn’t help to question some of the safety aspects of the rig, these thought were tempered by the evidence that the heavy load would likely keep Dad from riding very quickly except on the downhills.

The bike trailer looked like it was utilitizing a regular style bike trailer hitch. I noted on the bike trailer several interesting examples of DIY bike trailer ingenuity. The features that caught my attention the most were the bolted in seat and the bike tranporting boom, which appears to have wheel bays for various size bikes.

With his daughter in the bike child seat, his son in the DIY bike child trailer along with bike, this dad is well equipped for car-free family transportation.

Tandem Team Bike Commuting

thorn-tandem-with-vaude-tarpe-and-ortlieb-downtown-panniers-cropMy fiance and I decided to bike to work on our Thorn Tandem the other day. We are currently testing out 2 of the new bike commuting panniers that we are offering at BikeBagShop.com. I’ve been using the Orange Vaude Wright Tarp and Melanie has been riding with the Aubergene Ortlieb Downtown commuter pannier. It was entertaining to see both of the panniers mounted side-by-side on our RackTime Tourit Rack. The orange and purple reminded us of our Phoenix Suns that have just been eliminated from the NBA Playoffs. Does anyone else out there ride with an interesting color combo of bike panniers to represent their favorite team?

Bob’s DIY Bike Trailer Solutions Part 2

Our friend Bob sent us some more images of a bike dog trailer that he has been working on. Previously Bob had sent us some images of his DIY bike cargo trailers. Here’s what Bob has to say about his latest creation.

“This is my latest completed trailer with it’s happy passenger Quincy. This lady wanted a cargo hauler and something to haul her dog with. With this particular box, the lid snaps off very easily so the trailer becomes a dog hauler. She made a nice cushion for the bottom and the dog wears a little harness with 2 short leads so he can’t jump out of the trailer.”

In my estimation, Bob’s design looks solid, lightweight and offers some excellent functionality. Keep up the good work, Bob and we look forward to seeing your next DIY Bike Trailer.

New Bike Shop Hub Logo

Bike Shop Hub Logo 2We’ve been working with our friend, graphic designer Gary Thompson, to come up with a logo for the Bike Shop Hub. This is the result of a few good brainstorming sessions and we are glad to have an official logo representing the Bike Shop Hub as the center point for our growing network of niche bike shops, now including, BikeTrailerShop.com, BikeBagShop.com and BikeKidShop.com. We will be utilizing this logo in a reworking and expansion of this website as well as for T-Shirts, a sign for our new building and in various other place like on our twitter account.
