Toot-Toot! Bike Child Train Chugging Along

Our hats go off to all the intrepid families that gear up and take their children bike touring. This is one of the most impressive examples we’ve seen of a family of 6 figuring out a great solution for getting the whole family involved.
Here is what Eric had to say:

“We did a 5 day tour of the Kettle Valley railway in BC. My wife and I with our 4 kids (6, 5, 3, 1) did about 5 days of self supported camping and cycling along an old railway bed. We saw lots or wildlife and beautiful vistas. I pulled all the kids and a bit of gear(tent, water etc.). My wife pulled a trailer with food for 5 days and sleeping bags and clothes for everyone. It was tons of fun, and the kids can’t wait to do another trip this summer!”

Good times Good times were to be had at the 1st annual Flagstaff Hullabaloo. The event featured 4 great bands, kids events, great food and beer and lots of wacky, crazy people having fun. We decided to use it as an opportunity to let Flagstaff know that we had moved to a location in Downtown Flagstaff. We had some BikeShopHub.com T-Shirts done up along with a new banner for the Extrawheel Advert Trailer.

We set up a bunch of bike child trailers, bike cargo trailers, panniers and a bunch of kids stuff. With all of the kids at the event, the iBert Bike Child Safety Seat and our demo Strider Balance Bike were our biggest hits. We also had alot of interest in the Burley Travoy as well as the made in Flagstaff Wandertec BONGO bike trailer.

We also decided to deck out our Xtracycle Radish with an iBert, the new Xtracycle PeaPod and 6 different bike commuter panniers.

Extrawheel Trailers On The Rise

BikeTrailerShop.com just got in a batch of the new longer forks for the Extrawheel Voyager. These longer mounting forks were designed with 29er mountain bikes in mind, though the longer fork is also useful for the 28″ European wheel standard as well as for providing extra clearance for 26″ or 700c wheels with fenders.

As you know, the Extrawheel Voyager is a great bike trailer for mountain biking. With the recent rising numbers of 29ers in use, I thought it was very important for Extrawheel to get on the ball and manufacturer a longer version of their fork. They got to work promptly and its cool that they got them out there just in time for the summer bike touring season.

A Street Sign Reborn

If you have ever wondered what to do with all those old street signs that you stole as an adolescence we’ve got and idea for you. Robert sent us some pictures and a short story about his DIY bike cargo trailer that he created.

Robert officially named his project as the dog/hauler build. He came up with his own quick disconnect bike mount, which unfortunately he didn’t send any pictures of. One of the best parts of seeing all the different DIY bike trailer creations is the ingenious types of hitch designs and mounts that people have come up with.

Extrawheel Sale and New ExtraWheel 29er Forks

Now thru July 19th the Bike Trailer Shop is offering 5% off the purchase of any Extrawheel bicycle trailer and 10% off related accessories combined with the purchase. This includes the Extrawheel Voyager for $199, quite possibly the best off-road bike cargo trailer available and the Extrawheel Advert for $285, bringing pedal power to advertising.

extrawheel-advert-trailer-with-german-advertisementInspiring the sale, we have received the long awaited Voyager 29er forks. The best off-road trailer just got better. Tthe Voyager is a nimble trailer with either a full sized 26″ or 700c wheel. For the 29er crowd, we recommend the 700c wheel which is the same diameter rim as a 29er but with a smaller tire. Even for mountain biking, a smaller diameter, smooth tire is ideal.

When it comes to off-road bicycle touring the Voyager can’t be beat. The narrow profile coupled with the weight centered around the hub of the trailer wheel allows the Voyager to maneuver tight single-track like no other bike trailer can. Set up a 700c Voyager with a 29er and you wont even notice the bumps. The Voyager is a perfect set-up for Continental Divide or the Trans-Rocky or just for those looking for a trailer that won’t hold you back.

The Extrawheel Voyager was recently reviewed by Bicycle Times, check out what they had to say. The Extrawheel Expert Panniers make a great waterproof addition to the Voyager or mount some Ortlieb Back Roller Classics to the Voyagers universal mounting design. For all you Surly Pugsley riders don’t fret, the Bike Trailer Shop also carries Voyager and Advert forks to Fit your extra wide needs. All Extrawheel trailers will fit just about any rear hub whether is is a threaded axle or a quick release.

Cat Food Run with a Burley Travoy

For 10 years I lived in the Washington DC area. I had my folding bike, an account with a car-sharing service, and I lived near the DC Metro system. Life was good. But something was missing.

So I fell in love, moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, and got married.

Burley Travoy Cargo Trailer / Urban Commuter System - BikeTrailerShop.com

I realize now that what was really missing from my life in the DC area may have been a really amazing folding bike trailer, like the Burley Travoy “urban trailer system” which sells for $289–a small fraction of the cost of a wedding with 100 guests.

I’m sure the Travoy would have quickly paid for itself in other ways too. I think of all the times when I couldn’t resolve the (a) the load size, (b) the distance, and (c) the size constraints of public transportation and it’s related elevators. So I would rent a car, or pay for a taxi.

Thoughts on Child Helmets and Bike Trailers (& free helmets!)

We like cycling. We like kids. And we like safety. So how does that all come together you might ask?

Well for one it takes a bike, which you probably have. Second it takes a way to bring your kids along with you. This likely will need something like a bike child trailer which you may or may not have. And to keep it safe, we strongly recommend getting your kid or kids a bike child helmet.

Why get a child’s bike trailer in the first place? Perhaps you are bike commuting with your children. Or maybe you would like to go bike touring with your kids or maybe you are interested in just getting started with some casual family cycling in the neighborhood.
