Bike Tech Blog:

This is where we geek out over anything with circuitry that goes on a bike -- or on a cyclist.

Lights, electric bike kits, GPS, computer systems, and other bike tech gadgets.

And we'll take a closer look at some of the products found on Bike Tech Shop.

Submit your Bike Tech Photos

Bike Tech has its own charming kind of bike nerdery -- Times Square lights, gadget-packed dashboards, and electric-assist unicycles. Please send us a photo of your bike tech project, or something you've seen out in the wild. Submit your photos here and we'll let you know when we publish them.

Kalkhoff Electric Bike in Summer Flowers

Earlier this winter and spring I published several photos of the electric bikes that we are testing in the JOYBAG project (jump on your bike and go). Now that summer is here, it’s time for the bright cheerful tones of summer to show off the lines of our JOYBAG fleet. Here is the Kalkhoff ebike that I’m just about ready to post a review of at CommuteByBikc.com.

Two Wheels Green Delivery – By Custom Bike Cargo Trailer

We are going to be covering a few business’s using bike trailers over the next few weeks. To start things off, here is Two Wheels Green Delivery

I have a carbon free delivery service in Toronto, Canada. My trailer is custom made by a friend who has a small business making trailers. My goal this year in 2010 was to do 5000 km of deliveries, I may fall a bit short but have increased deliveries by 100% from last year.

I totally enjoy working with small businesses, and hope to add signage and affordable moving ad space for my customers in 2011.

Thanks for having this blog for bikes and trailers

From the great white north

Bike Shop Hub’s Pannier Upgrade Center

You’ve still got time to gear up for that summer bike tour trip you’ve been doing. Here’s a customer that’s been touring so long that he had to upgrade his panniers when he rolled through town. He was setup with Ortlieb Front and Back Roller Classics mounted to a Tubus Duo Front Rack and Tubus Cargo Rear Rack.

Now is a great time to gear up for a summer bike tour or to get yourself better situated for a bike commute. We’ve got the fullest selection of bike bags and racks by Ortlieb, Tubus and Racktime around. And they are ALL 10% off through July 5th!

Where Might An Extrawheel Take You?

A customer of ours sent us these 3 photos of his Extrawheel hooked up to his recumbent. We’re running an Extrawheel sale thru June 12th so what better time to post up a little bit of inspiration through photography. Here is what Ray had to say:

These are 3 photos from my most recent 700 mile trip (10 days) from Orlando up A1A to Georgia and back. My “Extrawheel” trailer, holding all my camping equipment, performed flawlessly – I couldnt have done it without. As a recumbent biker, I have already a long bike, so the very compact “Extrawheel” was the perfect choice for my 40 extra pounds.

Fratelli’s Electric Pizza Delivery Bike on the Loose

Last week our friend Brent rolled up on his business’s Fratelli Pizza’s new electric delivery bike. This is one slick setup and we were quite excited that they took the plunge with getting it. The bike incorporate what looks like a Madsen Cargo Bike frame into an overall package which includes a large sectioned area for food and drinks. This same area also houses the two lithium ion battery and protects the electric motor.

This bike, put together by a company called Thrust, is really quite impressive with a very powerful acceleration to 20 MPH in 5 seconds. I caught a shot of the bike in the wild turning off RT. 66. This looks like a cost effective and eco-freindly way for Fratelli’s to do pizza delivery by bike and we are excited to hear about how it progresses.

The Hembrow Family’s Bike Cargo Trailers and the Daily Routine

Our friend David Hembrow and his wife Judy sent us these photos depicting how bike cargo trailers fit into their daily routine. “We use our bikes and trailers almost every day, for food shopping, dog walking, collecting things for our business and for going on holiday.”
Pictured in these photos are a Carry Freedom City, a BOB Trailer with one of David Hembrow’s BOB Baskets and what looks like a Wandertec BONGO Trailer with another of David’s baskets mounted. David and his family look like they really make great use of their collection of trailers. David moved his basket weaving business to the Netherlands from the UK.

Along with his beautiful custom baskets, David also keeps busy writing a great blog, running cycling holidays and offering up a specialty online shop Dutch Bike Bits.

It really looks like David has found himself in cycling paradise. What could be better than bike paths in every direction and a fleet of bike trailers?

This Bike Could Use Some Lights

I’ve been trying to capture photos of bicyclists out on the road at night. It hasn’t proved to be an easy thing. This shot worked mainly because of the bright lights of the truck and car behind. Hopefully this guy at least had a rear blinkey….

The Burley/BOB Train Grows a Caboose

Choo..Choo….It’s the final day of our Burley Trailer Sale, so I thought I’d post this fun looking setup of a Burley Solo.

Glenn recently sent us this updated photo of his BOB Trailer/Burley Solo Bonanza. Glen sent us some images when he was first got this setup underway. His setup has taken the step from interesting to downright eye-catching with this fun looking caboose profile attached. And the BOB Trailer serves well as a bike rack for his son’s bike.

And here is what Glenn had to report:

This is an update from my previous post…I needed a convenient way to transport my son and his bike to our local community rides as well as get him excited to go (he really loves trains).

Bike Shop Hub Rack Sculpture Underway

Every time we setup a booth at a festival, such as this year’s Hullabalo, I tend to bring way to much stuff. This year, I thought I did a good job of pairing it back until I decided to drag this giant metal version of the Bike Shop Hub logo that Stu was working on. This is destined to be the centerpiece of a sculptural bike rack that Stu is building to put up in front of our shop for customers to lock there bikes to. It sort of looks like a giant front wheel of this Hebb Electric Bike from the perspective of this shot.

Oscar Likes the Strider Balance Bike

Last year, we saw that Strider Balance Bikes were a big hit with the kids at the Hullabalo. So we decide to bring out 2 of them this year. Our friend Brent of Fratelli Pizza has been eying one for his son Oscar. Oscar is definitely sold. I’m not sure when his birthday is, but seems like a good idea for Dad.
