I enjoyed testing a set of Arkel GT-54′s mounted on a Thorn Tandem during a bike tour last fall.

When comparing non-waterproof panniers like Arkel to waterproof panniers like Ortlieb panniers, we always point out the advantages of sewn bags in that they have quite a bit more organization than waterproof panniers because it is much more feasible for zippers, pockets and other features to be sewn in. The downside is that for waterproof protection, additional rain covers are required.
