Bike Share in Hangzhou, China

by Melanie Colavito

There are a number of famous places throughout Europe, as well as a handful in the U.S. that are often heralded as being downright awesome for bicycling. However, it’s less common to hear about great bicycling places in Asia. Today, Streetfilms has a great feature on a bike share system in Hangzhou, China. The numbers of people using the bike share are pretty incredible. According to Streetfilms:

Hangzhou’s 2,050 bike-share stations are spaced less than a thousand feet from each other in the city center, and on an average day riders make 240,000 trips using the system. Its popularity and success have set a new standard for bike-sharing in Asia. And the city is far from finished. The Hangzhou Bicycle Company plans to expand the bike-share system to 175,000 bikes by 2020!

It’s great to hear about bicycling successes throughout the world, and I’d imagine China will continue to see large increases in the use of bicycles for transportation in the future.

  1. A quarter million trips daily is freaking amazing.

  2. […] Seen first by me at Utility Cycling. […]

  3. We have one in Stuttgart and it works well. It’s run by the railway company but funded by the city and would probably work even better if the city would improve infrastructure for bikes and possibly even clear bike lanes of snow in winter.
