Racktime Addit Rack – Zinger & Quick Review

racktime-addit-rear-rack-black-stock

The Zinger of the day is the RackTime AddIt Rear Rack!!! We’ve marked them down from$59 to $49 for the next week (thru November 1st).

The RackTime AddIt Rear Rack is a great rack designed with multi-purpose use in mind. RackTime is a new brand, developed by Tubus. Tubus wanted to offer up more economically priced racks and bags for bike commuters and weekend bike tourists. They’ve put together a really great lineup of racks and bags all at very affordable prices.

Tubus’s expertise in racks truly shines through in their much more affordable RackTime line. Many similar parts and designs have been integrated into the designs of their racks.

The RackTime AddIt features a somewhat unique profile with its upper rail that swoops back around as a lower rail. This offers up 2 both upper and lower mounting positions for bike panniers. The AddIt has the SnapIt mounting system integrated in for receiving all of the RackTime bags that utilize this system. The AddIt offers up a comfortably wide upper platform and unlike many other “economy” racks which use flexible expanded metal for upper mounting, utilizes Tubus’s very solid Round Stay and Round Stay Clamp Set. Additionally, the AddIt offers up an integrated rear light mounting point, perfect for adding on a light like the Busch & Muller 4D Toplight.

The AddIt like the Tubus rack line up offers up a graceful, stylish design. Designed for both bike commuting and weekend tours, the AddIt might be just the perfect fit for your bike.

Ortlieb Bike Shoppers – Zinger & Quick Review

ortlieb-bike-shopper-silver-stockortlieb-bike-shopper-black-matte-stockortlieb-bike-shopper-yellow-stockortlieb-bike-shopper-beige-stock

The Zinger of the day is the Ortlieb Bike Shopper Panniers!!! We’ve marked them down from$85 to $75 for the next week (thru October 27th).

The Bike Shopper is a classic Ortlieb pannier. The bike shopper is setup to keep a bag of groceries dry and secure. Sold as a single pannier, the Bike Shopper is ideal for not only groceries, but also as a second pannier for any type of use. The Bike Shopper pannier is a great second pannier to be coupled with one of Ortlieb’s bike commuter specific panniers. My personal setup recently has been an Ortlieb Downtown for my laptop, notebooks, clothes and food etc. On the other side of my rack, the Bike Shopper is where I store my rain gear and bungee straps in case in need to strap something to my bike rack. The Bike Shopper also serves as my spot for extra capacity, whether it’s picking up groceries, bringing in some cake to work or bringing home products to review.

Form: The Bike Shopper comes in 4 colors, silver, yellow, creme and black (shown above). The black has an interesting pleather look and texture. I’d have to say the silver is my favorite both for its shiny look and it’s reflective aspects, repelling sun-rays from your groceries. The bag is not the height of style, but rather has that rugged, durable, functional Ortlieb look that says this product gets the job done.

Function: The simplicity of the Bike Shopper’s design is its strength but is definitely a weakness if this is not what you are looking for. One large compartment is perfect for transporting all sorts of things. The Quick Seal Closure does the job of closing and opening the pannier quickly and easily. The QSC offers both a reliable waterproof closure and by sticking up on the top of the pannier effectively offers some extra capacity. The two adjustable handles allow for the pannier to be transported easily by hand or over the shoulder. One thing that seems to be missing is a neat way to secure the handle when on the bike. While it’s configuration makes it so that it won’t drag on the ground or into the wheel, it does flop around a little bit.

A few other features to mention are the internal pocket that can hold a few small personals like a wallet, phone or tools. The Shopper utilizes the Ortlieb’s great QL-2 upper and lower mounting system to secure the pannier to your bike rack and finally the bag has front and rear reflective spots for added viability.

To sum it up, this is a great pannier for someone looking for a great all around use in a single pannier.

Vaude Silk Road II – Zinger & Quick Review

silkroad-II-black-anthracite-side-mounted

The Zinger of the day is the Vaude Silk Road II at 20% of for $39. That’s the deal on this great little rack-top bag for the next week thru October 25th.

To get the ball rolling, here is a a quick review on the bag’s form and function.

To start out, I will just say that this bag packs a punch when it comes to value. This bag is incredibly feature rich for a rack-top bag at this price point. Going down the list, it’s got 2 side-pockets for small items, an expandable main compartment with a removable pouch, a cargo net upper, a rear water bottle holder, an included shoulder strap and an included rain cover. All of these features are brought together elegantly with Vaude’s styling and quality.

The Silk Road II, pictured here mounted to a Tubus Logo will quikly mount to any standard style bicycle rack and is easy to tote as a shoulder bag when off the bike. The bags main compartment area has formed foam walls, both for maintaining its shape and offering insulation should you be using it to carry your lunch or a picnic.

This bag looks classy as well. the black and grey compliment eachother and will look good with almost any rack and bike color scheme. I think it would be hard to go wrong with this bag if this is the style you are looking for, especially at the current sale price of $39.

Today’s Zinger & Quick Review – The Vaude Egger Pannier

We’re kicking off something new today. We’re going to be throwing up a week long sale of a random item that we feel inspired by ONCE A DAY!!! So sign up to our RSS Feed or get our daily zinger updates through FaceBook or Twitter.

egger-front-viewToday’s Zinger of the Day is the Vaude Egger Bike Commuter Pannier is only $109 ($20 off) for a week (thru Oct. 21).

This great looking bike pannier offers many great points in both form and function.

On the form side, this bag comes off as a stylish understated bag that is professional yet still has a slight sporty edge to it. The black fabric looks nice with touches of the silver Vaude logo and the reflective vertical stripes.

On the function side. this bag is perfect for anyone who regularly carries either a laptop or books along with lunch, an extra layer or a change of clothes. The laptop pocket is perfect for even the largest laptop and offers sufficient padded protection. The main compartment is really quite roomy, and could easily fit a change of clothes and lunch. I could even imagine loading a bag of groceries in there if it was relatively empty. The 3 outer organizational pockets offer great organization for smaller items. I really like the upper horizontal pocket for letters and other small documents. The fleece lined rear pocket seems ideal for devises like ipods or phones. The lower main pocket is useful enough. It does seem like the zipper actually opens up to much and that items would fall out the sides. I like the organizational features of the two pockets and two pen holder inside without it going overboard with these types of features.

Vaude’s QMR attachment system is both secure and adjustable and the flap allows for it to be quickly disguised when you are headed into a meeting. The flap simply rolls up and tucks under itself when not in use. The upper handle is sturdy for short hoists of the bag and the included shoulder strap is decent quality and positions the bag nicely as a shoulder bag when off the bike. I’m still waiting for a shoulder strap that more rapidly stows away for going from walking to biking, but it really is not to difficult to unclip one side and tuck it into the bag. The rain cover does it’s job well enough tucking away into a very small included stuff sack that nicely stows in the outer pocket. While I’m a fan of waterproof panniers, I do like the soft touch and more stylized features of non-waterproof panniers and in the dry-climate of Arizona, occasionally pulling out the rain cover is not to burdensome.

Overall, this is a great pannier for bike commuters and it’s hard to beat the current price BikeBagShop.com is offering up for the next week.

Chrome Citizen Bag Review

Chrome Citizen Messenger Bag Black Buckle Front Stock

The Bike Bag shop recently added Chrome messenger bags and backpacks to the shop lineup. We have been excited about Chrome for some time, as they are a well-recognized bag company and bring a little style as well as quality and function. I personally have never had a Chrome bag before so I grabbed one off the shelf for some-long term testing.

The bag I chose was the Chrome Citizen. The Citizen is considered a medium-sized shoulder sling messenger bag. It seemed about the right size for me and what I tend to carry with me on the bike. The Citizen is available in different colors, but I went for the standard gray. At first touch the bag isn’t too heavy or bulky. Most of the weight is actually in the shoulder strap focused at the main buckle. The seat belt style buckle is a recognized feature of Chrome, not only because it actually is a real auto seat belt, but because each one has Chrome’s logo on the buckle button. The buckle certainly makes it easy to take the bag on and off when it has a load in it. The only downside is when your drunk friends think it’s funny to watch your bag fall off your shoulder when they hit the buckle release button.

DSC_0874The outer part of the bag is constructed from a hard-wearing Cordura, and the inside is a waterproof PVC fabric. The bag feels well made, and feels like it will stand up to years of abuse. The main interior pocket has plenty of room for a laptop, lunch, a six pack and a jacket, to be exact. There are three secondary pockets. The front pocket could fit a book or day planner. The two side pockets are great for water bottles–they are a little deeper than the front pocket but not as wide. There is a smaller, zippered pocket which fits a wallet and other valuables such as car keys perfectly. Last but not least, there are two pen/pencil slots and a wider slot which could provide quick access to a cell phone or camera. The bag closes securely via two beefy Velcro straps. The bag’s hood attaches to the front of the bag, followed by two plastic buckles that allow for further security, and can be tightened using the reflective straps attached to each buckle.

DSC_0891It took me a little while to get used to the left side shoulder strap. All Chrome bags come standard as left-hand drive (meaning, for mostly for the right-handed) but are available in right (for lefties). Until this point in my life, I’ve worn messenger bags over my right shoulder. The first couple of times I put the Citizen on, I had to think about what I was doing. It didn’t take long to get used to having the strap over my left shoulder. Being right-handed, I actually found it more convenient. The shoulder strap itself is really well made. Both ends are constructed from what appears to be true automobile seat belt fabric, which goes nicely with the seat belt buckle. So there’s no doubting the strength of the strap. The shoulder side is equipped with a hefty wide pad which does a great job of minimizing any pressure points on your shoulder. There is an additional smaller underarm strap that helps further to stabilize the bag. Both adjustments on the main strap and underarm strap are super simple and easily executed with one hand.

Riding is where this bag really shines. Chrome definitely designed this bag to be on the back of a cyclist. Once you get the bag positioned to the right spot on your back, you completely forget it’s there. Even with a heavy load (e.g. a twelve pack of PBR) there isn’t any discomfort in the shoulder or back. The bag just seems to hover in its spot on your back and stays put quite nicely. I like the incorporation of reflective material where usable. Increased visibility always helps. There is also a loop for a light which remains exposed on the front of the bag after the bag is closed shut.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the construction and feel of the Chrome Citizen. Having had friends who rave about Chrome bags, I always wondered if they were really better then your average messenger bag. The design is not overly complicated, and it is effective. The Citizen is comfortable to wear, looks good and is about the right size for a medium messenger bag. I give 4 out of 5 spoke cards. The only thing I would like to see–and this is a personal preference–is a more squared-off shape. Call me anal, but I like to keep my storage compartments organized and I think a square shape works a little better. The Chrome Citizen is a quality, well-made bag that will last for years, and has all the fixin’s that you would expect on a messenger bag of this price, and then some. I would recommend one to anyone.

Chrome!

chrome-4 Since our humble beginnings at Bike Bag Shop we have focused on carrying brands that are geared towards the utility of cycling. Bike bags are, by nature and definition, products designed to increase the usability of your bike, whether it is for bike touring, bike commuting, or hauling groceries. The Bike Bag Shop has prided itself by carrying some of the best products available in those respective categories. Ortlieb, Jandd and Vaude are some of the best bike touring panniers on the market. Old Man Mountain and Tubus are known for their quality rack construction. One thing that many of these brands, and Bike Bag Shop as a whole, have in common is that their primary focus is in the function of their design, leaving fashion and lifestyle second. Obviously, if you are bike touring across Mongolia, function is going to be your only concern. You need your rack and bags to be sturdy, reliable and functional. But what if you could take utility and function and blend it with fashion and lifestyle. This has become one of our new focuses at the Bike Bag Shop and we are starting with Chrome.
