Message: I really like the design of the Tubus Cosmo in that it includes the lower rail of the Logo as well as the updaide down V shaped strut of the Cargo. Obviously steel is attractive to me because of the piece of mind it offers being that it can be welded in the event something breaks.

I will be using it in remote areas and on rough roads and trails and I'm curious whether going with stainless vs choromoly is any issue in terms of any emergency welding.

I've read in some places that chromoly is stronger than stainless and in others that stainless is stronger. Is there any significant difference?

Thanks,
Michael

Hello Michael,

I spoke to our in house welder whom knows a quite a bit about this type of stuff and here is what I learned.

Chromoly is a stronger metal to use for racks, however, it will rust if given the chance.  Stainless is not as strong, but will not degrade over time because of rust.   If one was to need a stainless rack repaired and all that was available was a MIG welder and standard rod it could be done, but that repair would only last so long because it would rust and the two metals would corrode with each other.

In his opinion the best setup would be Chromoly rack powder coated with level high grade zinc hardware.

If you have any additional questions about this feel free to ask.

This is exactly the type of info I was looking for, thank you.

If going the powder coated chromoly route I would assume that it would be a good thing to wrap the areas that panniers hooks and mounting hardware comes in contact with some kind of protective tape or just plain electrical tape.

Protection on the racks for areas with lots of wear is definitely a good idea depending on factors like how abrasive the material the pannier attachment system is and how much jostling around the panniers go through.

Tubus racks do include Tubus antiscratch pads, which can alternatively be replace with other protective coverings like electrical tape.

I opted for the Logo from Bike Bag Shop as did my friends but neither came with any protective patches. I'm thinking of using the tape that they sell for protecting tennis racket heads from scuffs.

What are the Tubus patches like?
