Father, son commute by pedal power

On his ride to work the other day, Ted Currens felt the comfort of knowing his 5-year-old son, Max, was right behind him.

Pedaling all the way.

Father and son have enjoyed an interesting commute for the last year or so, riding a bike downtown from their home west of the Boulevard – or taking a bus in bad weather – to Max’s child-care center and Ted’s job. When the daily expeditions started, Max rode in a safety seat bolted to the back of his dad’s bike. When he outgrew the seat, he graduated to a one-wheeled, tag-along bike, which was still attached to the bigger bicycle but offered Max the freedom to help with the pedaling.

“He just loves being on the bike,” Ted said of Max.
