Commuting 101: Bike Tips Video

Tip of the helmet to FatBoy.

The U.S. Department of Transportation – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration produced this Bicycle Safety Tips for Adults video.

It’s a fairly common sense video – but if you’re just getting started commuting, it might be worth 7 minutes of your time. Included is a quick run through the ABC Quick Check
A = Air
B = Brakes
C = Cranks, Chain & Cassettes

Quick = Quick Releases
Check to make sure there is nothing else loose on your bike.

  1. Fritz says:

    I have a better mnemonic. A = air, b = brakes, c = drivetrain, and Q = ensure your pants are rolled up tight.

  2. guez says:

    “Quick” and “Check” are mnemonics too? Does that make this the “ABC Quick Check” quick check?

  3. Fritz says:

    “Quick Check” are indeed part of the mnemonic. Realize, though, that mnemonics are just memory aids, not necessarily initial letters or acronyms. DOC is a picture of the phases of the moon, for example, and the raised knuckles of both human hands are a mnemomic to remember the number of days in each month.

  4. Warren T says:

    The pellet with the poison’s in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!

  5. Fritz says:

    But they broke the chalice from the palace and replaced it with a flagon from a dragon.

  6. This is a good concise overview of bicycle safety tips.

    But If you want more I have put together an online bicycling course ( consisting of over two and a half hours of video and a 48 page course text. The video covers 17 topics and the topics vary in length from five to twenty minutes in length.
