Moving Beyond the Automobile Series

Streetfilms has a new series called Moving Beyond the Automobile, which will be a ten part series about the many ways in which different groups, agencies, individuals, and more are working together to create strategies to reduce our reliance on the automobile. The first of the series came out today and focuses on Transit-Oriented Development. Although this series does not focus specifically on utility cycling, it has many important implications, as a reduction in automobile use can be very favorable to cycling in all forms. So we hope you enjoy the first in the series, which focuses on developing dense urban areas around transportation cores to reduce car usage.

To add on, being able to not own a car frees up monies to invest, spend on other things, and or save for retirement. It strikes me a strange that opponents of TOD or public transit in general protest being” forced” out of their cars. Many of us just want an affordable option.

  3. That is a great point, Karen. But I think that rhetoric is really powerful in these kinds of issues, and clearly the idea of “being forced”, even if it’s not accurate or representative of what is actually happening, can serve to benefit those with an interest in keeping people in their cars. As cyclists, we need to continue our positive rhetoric about the benefits of riding to drown out the negative ones!
