Comparison's between Tubus Titanium Racks

Via BikeBagShop.com Email:

I am a road rider who mixes a daily commute with 70 mile cafe racer runs, the occasional crit and some cyclo touring.
A friend and I recently built up a Lynskey Sportive one for each of us. The plan is that this will be our touring / traveling bike. Next year we’re off to France for 4 weeks and plan to be self contained on a bike.
We are looking for a rear rack that is both lightweight and strong and some quality rear panniers. I expect to carry clothes, toiletries, but not necessarily a tent or sleeping bag, (but that may come one day the USA coast to coast, or South America for example) so 25kg should be ample. Can you help us with:

  • I”ve seen the titanium racks Carry or Titan? I can’t quite figure out the difference
  • Tubus Logos look good but heal clearance shouldn’t be an issue. Should we go there?
  • If you were in my shoes what you get? (and money isn’t a big deal but don’t want to throw it away either!)

-The Tubus Titanium racks are very light weight and strong. Here are the key differences between the models that have been available to us:

– The Carry Titan and the Airy Titanium are almost the same rack. Basically the Carry is an Airy with additional lower pannier rails. Tubus USA no longer imports the Carry Titan because it is so similar to the Logo rear rack.

– The Tubus Logo Titanium is just like the chromoly version in design but quite a bit lighter in weight. The top platform is wider than the Carry Titan or the Airy and has a flat top platform instead of curving up on the end.

The lower pannier rails on the Logo offer some benefits in addition to more heel clearance. These allow you to have something mounted to the top of the rack, like a tent or sleeping bag, and panniers at the same time without competing for mounting space. With out the lower rail you would not be able to conveniently attach and remove the panniers. The other advantage of the extra pannier rails is that they help lower the center of gravity of your gear.
