Overview
The Ortlieb Commuter Bag is a modern bike briefcase. The bag has a flap with a buckled main compartment. This may be Ortlieb’s most versatile Urban/Commuting bag. It’s a huge favorite here because of its versatility and volume. Easily able to swallow up a change of clothes, lunch and a laptop, you can even cram in some light shopping on the way home. Constructed of soft-touch PU-laminated.Cordura-cotton fabric, the system is waterproof except for the external pocket. The light colored interior makes finding things easy. We recommend you put a small LED light on the keychain holder in case you need to dig around in the dark. The bag is available in a medium (M) and large (L) size as well as both of Ortiebs versatile and well designed mounting systems: the QL2.1 and QL3.1

got it as a gift, recipient loves it

The QL3.1 attachment system is really an improvement for when you actually need to step away from your bike. Will update this review if I hear more from the recipient. So far so good.

Wonderful Bag

I bought this commuter bag because I was tired of my other bag flying off my rack whenever I hit a bad pothole. It is so nice to not have to worry about that anymore. Also, my commute involves three bike rides separated by a trip on a ferry and a trip in a train. So I am constantly taking my bag off the rack and putting it back on. This bag is just perfect for that. The Ortlieb bracket design is awesome. It was easy to install on my bike, feels secure and sturdy while not adding much weight, and makes the back of the bag smooth and neat, without anything that catches on your clothes or gets caught on other things. The one drawback is that you can only use the bag on one bike, although Ortlieb probably sells these rack adapters separately if you want to install two or more. Aside from the connection to the bike, other things I love about this bag are the size (not to small and not to large), the look (fancy but not tacky), and the ways you can carry it while walking (messenger style and like a briefcase in your hand). Also, the interior organization is both convenient for laptops and other business stuff and flexible enough for larger things like clothes or lunch. The only thing I have not yet experienced is how well this bag will hold up in the rain, since we are in the dry season now here in California. I will update this review to reflect these experiences after it starts raining again.

Ortlieb commuter bag

Newer Ortlieb design for bracket is good because bag itself has less hardware on it and so is lighter and more comfortable and less clunky-looking. Can pass for an actual work case, but still functions as a pannier. Downside of new bracket design is that hardware is on the bike rack, so you can’t click the bag onto just any bike.

Ruggedly constructed, effectively waterproof, elegant looking, with one caveat: it looks floppy and out of shape, when not full. I have an answer to that. Read on.

I clip the excellent bag to the standard rear rack of my Trek SSB commuter, and then carry the case into meetings, where nobody bats an eye at the use of a cycle bag at the conference table. The only drawback to the bag is that it looks a bit bedraggled and floppy when not held firm through being full with computer and papers. The ideal would be if the case included inflatable plastic bags to blow up and fill the voids when actual office needs leave those voids. Then the bag would look much smarter. If you want to put more stuff in it, then simply deflate a plastic filler bag or two. How smart the always-full-looking bag would appear.
